FAQs

  • How are jobs billed?

Jobs are primarily estimated by the number of “units” to be sawed. An example of 1 unit is 20” diameter x 8’. Each unit is billed at $150. There is a 1 time fee of $150 for travel and setup. This includes travel to and from the jobsite and setup/teardown.

  • Can I have my logs hauled to the sawmill instead of milling on my property?

Yes. On many occasions it is better to haul the logs to the mill instead of hauling equipment to the location of the logs. Hauling fees are dependent on the accessibility of the logs, load size, and mileage.

  • Should I let my logs dry/lay/age before milling?

Generally it is best to saw logs as close to the time they were harvested as possible. Some pine trees are best to let rest until the bark begins to fall off.

  • How can I prepare my logs prior to arrival?

It is recommended but not required to seal the butt ends of the logs. One product we use is called anchor seal. It can be painted on with a brush and is not expensive. If a job is to be done on-site, we prefer the logs to be free of mud and debris, stacked in a location that is safely accessible with a tractor. Logs will also last longer if there is no contact with the ground.

  • What are the maximum and minimum dimensions desirable for sawing into lumber or slabs?

Our current mobile saw is rated up to 36” diameter. At times, the weight of a log can be the limiting factor, not the diameter of the log. The maximum length is 20’. The minimum diameter recommended is 12” and the minimum length is 6’. The most desirable logs are straight, free of rot, free of metal, and larger logs are generally preferred.

  • What should I expect after services are complete?

After services are complete, you will be left with sorted lumber stacked on cribbing. It is recommended that you “sticker” your lumber using 1”x1” spacers between each layer of lumber. Each spacer should be placed approximately 16” apart. After the lumber is stacked and stickered it is best to cover the lumber to shield it from sun/rain.

  • Can I have a standing tree milled?

Yes. Floyd Milling is licensed and insured tree removal service, however, tree removal and milling services will be billed separately and will not occur in the same visit.

  • Will sawmilling on my property be messy?

Yes. Sawmills produce a straight line pile of sawdust. A tarp can be placed underneath prior to milling to minimize cleanup time. Floyd Milling is not responsible for cleanup unless an agreement to do so was discussed prior to service. In addition to sawdust, bark, and waste, the equipment used to move logs can create wear on the work surface.
